Project for Concept Art & Look Development for VFX Course, HdM
08 / 2020
The Sorray was a Creature Concept that was developed for the Concept Art and Look Development for VFX Course at the HdM Stuttgart.
This was the final assignment we got for the course.
We were tasked to create a creature that would fit into the fantastic beasts universe and which had the following traits:
- rather short statue
- black sad looking eyes
- calm herbivore
- magical creature
- magical hair
- very shy creature
My concept for the traits was a shy plant eater that could magically change the color of it’s hair throughout the length of it, which it uses as camoflage as well as to communicate its feelings.
The following were the Moods I picked out for the different aspects of the creature:

This was a rough concept sketch I did for the creature:

My plan was for the fur color to start out with colors using the left picture as a texture map and blending over its length to the right pictures textures.

I only had a very short amount of time left for grooming and I didn’t have much experience with it and therefore was struggling a lot with Xgen. For that reason I sadly had to abandon my magic hair concept and the groom turned out rather disappointing for me.
Originally I had planned to blend over the length of the fur from one texture to another to show the magic fur, but I couldn’t even get the groom to use one of the textures. I left the fur in the final submission because it was a requirement of the creature we should come up with, so to make it magical I settled for making it slightly irridescent.
