Sam lives with his robot Buddy in a futuristic apartment. He leads a relaxed life until he is one day confronted by the reality of his environment.

This animated short film was created as a student production (StuPro) project at the HdM Stuttgart (Link to HdM Project Site).

It was our first StuPro and was preproduced in the 3rd Semester, and then went into production in our 4th Semester during the 2nd Covid Semester (WS20/21), therefore it was a completely remote production with everyone working from home.

With this film we wanted to motivate action and ecological consciousness about climate change.

Our Inspiration for this film came from Netflixes Love Death & Robots, specifically S1s Beyond the Aquila Rift. The shifting of perception and reality was something that resonated with us, and which we thought could be a great metaphor in how we can blind ourselves to the state of climate change due to living comfortably, and the urgent need for change being only visible, when you really look at the state of things.

Early Concept Art done by myself in late preproduction

We then moved on to develop a unique character appearance of Sam, and with Buddy we combined the idea of a tablet device with a kitchen tablet, and made them flexible to give them more expression. This was mainly done by Jeremias Wax, who drew the following Character Concept Art:

For Buddys Expressions, Jeremias Wax also did some amazing work in Pixel Art.

The rigging of Buddy was then done by myself. I used a lot of Soft Selection Modifiers to enable their flexibility. You can see a showcase of the rig here:
