The student magazine Campus Falke was my first big foray into graphic design and especially layout. I joined in 2016, because they had a photo spread and I loved photography and wanted to contribute to that. Then, when the previous layout person finished their degree and they were looking for someone to take over, I volunteered since it seemed interesting and I immediately loved it.
The work with InDesign, where you really had full control over where and how every element is placed, especially contrasting MS Word, really appeals to me. Since CF was using the Din A5 format for print, I proposed changing to an A4 format, since the A5 layout blueprint we were using was quite crammed and limiting. This was met with open arms and I got to do a re-design and modernization of the magazine, which I was even paid for by stuvus, the students council overseeing among other things, Campus Falke.
For the new design I was prompted to tie it into stuvus more by adapting it to their branding and colors, but overall I was quite free in creating the new design and layout.
Key elements that were implemented were:
- Modernizing the Logo and adapting it to vector graphics
- Creating a new base Layout
- Going from two columns to three
- Differentiating the various sections by using title pages and unique colors
- Tye-in of section color to info boxes and page number for easy navigation.
Below you can see an overview of the changes to the Layout, as well as some more specific examples of layouting, but if you’re more interested in the short ad film I produced for Campus Falke, you can check that out here.

This is the new Title Page, which is tied in with the Table of contents a few pages later to give each issue identity through the title photo. Since stuvus uses a color fade from green to blue, these colors are represented in the borders of the textboxes on the titlepage.

Since every section had it’s own titlepage, I used the titlepage of the photography spread, which was also my jurisdiction, to give that it’s own cover, which was a lovely opportunity for creativity too.
