A young woman finds herself in nature.

Isolation is a film very much rooted in the early pandemic and lockdown and driven by it’s limits and opportunities. It was created for my Digital Editing course at the HdM Stuttgart. We were interestingly given the topic „Travel“ for our project, right where that wasn’t possible anymore.

I wanted to tie physical movement to a mental state and examine how being stuck physically can hinder progress mentally. The process of travel, for me, could also be internally, that she returns to the same place, but mentally, she is somewhere new at the end.

I wanted to express this confinement and the different states as well through cinematic language, like the difference of muted colors in the beginning and slowly becoming more colorful until a very warm and cozy grade in the end. Framing was another part of this, where I wanted to start with quite close shots and move away further and further as she starts to examine her surroundings and almost lose herself in that but at the same time become one with the wide nature arround her.

Charlie Cunningham’s song „An Opening“ expressed this very well, so I chose to frame this journey around this song, which also helped with editing and rhythm. If you’re looking for more organic editing, check out my documentary Roll With Me.
